Workshop for Graduate Students/PostDoc - Tech Originator Practicum
The Tech Originator Practicum (TOP) aims to inspire and prepare STEAM graduate students and postdocs for creating technology ventures and pursuing corporate entrepreneurship. It covers the foundational steps necessary for technology originators to commercialize their inventions based on proven processes used by successful entrepreneurs by addressing these fundamental questions: Does a business idea have the potential to become a successful business? How to discover potential customers’ needs and desires? How to start a new venture with limited resources? How to craft a successful business pitch? The ultimate outcomes for this workshop are to increase the awareness, excitement, and confidence of participants about pursuing careers as technology entrepreneurs. Our inaugural practicum was hosted at M&T Bank’s Long Island regional headquarters in January 2023 and received rave reviews from our participants. The January 2023 class were taught by our Strategy and Entrepreneruship faculty and industry partners from X Development LLC (FKA as Google X), IBM Quantum, GE Aerospace, Well.co, and SBU’s Intellectual Property Partners.
Practice Launch in the Licensed Professions
Overview
Towards the university goal of inter-disciplinary engagement between Stony Brook University Colleges, this program shall leverage the expertise of the Strategy & Entrepreneurship discipline and broader College of Business faculty to collaborate with SBU programs preparing students for licensed professions. Such collaborations will provide the essential business skills for entrepreneurial-minded students and alumni that plan to launch private practices in the various licensed professions programs offered by Stony Brook University. Students and alumni in these disciplines are traditionally highly skilled and exceptionally trained in their fields of study, yet lack the education and foundations of strategy, entrepreneurship, law, finance, human resources, marketing, and organization leadership to launch and manage a private practice. The College of Business leverages these competencies by presenting best-practice core strategic principles to enable these aspiring licensed professionals to launch private practices in their respective fields.
Mission
To strengthen the education and career development of the Stony Brook University community by offering a program that provides the competencies necessary for entrepreneurial-minded students and alumni in Medicine, Dentistry, Dermatology, Health Professions (e.g. Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social Work), Nursing, Psychology, Engineering, and more to develop the skills needed to formulate a feasible plan to launch and manage a private practice with benchmark strategic planning principles to ensure long-term success.
